About the margin
I’m Hans W. A. Hanley. I write The Margin of Error to make sense of politics and public life.
I’m especially interested in how information moves through networks, how political narratives take hold, and what the available evidence can—and cannot—tell us. That has led me to write about disinformation, news media, elections, democracy, and international affairs.
This site brings together essays first published on Substack, work published elsewhere, and new writing. When an article grows out of an analysis, I include the code, data, or interactive work so readers can follow how I reached the conclusion.
